These points count toward a full professional membership with CIAAD/UNSDGs and are recognized in the 193 member countries of the United Nations.

Introduction

Design professionals are trained to meet the needs of our clients and building users, and the benefits of design thinking extend to those people. However, sustainable design goes further by mitigating the environmental impact of building construction and use, and by anticipating and adapting to the effects of climate change. In this masterclass, we will discuss concepts and professional standards related to sustainable design, and current environmental and user functionality issues.

Abstract

Sustainable design is an integrative approach that seeks to minimize negative environmental impacts while enhancing the well-being of individuals and communities.

It encompasses a broad range of practices that prioritize resource efficiency, ecological balance, and the health of the environment across the entire lifecycle of products and services. This  approach is critical in transitioning to a sustainable society, where economic activities support long-term ecological resilience and social equity.

A sustainable society fosters a harmonious relationship between human activities and the natural world, ensuring that the needs of the present are met without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This involves rethinking consumption patterns, promoting renewable energy, and encouraging policies that support sustainable living practices. By embedding principles of sustainability into design processes, industries can innovate in ways that reduce waste, lower carbon footprints, and create products that are safe, efficient, and socially responsible.

In this masterclass we will learn how to achieving a sustainable society through partnerships to the SDGs and collaboration across multiple sectors, including government, business, and civil society. We will discuss systemic changes and the adoption of holistic frameworks that integrate economic, environmental, and social goals. Through education, policy development, and community engagement, a sustainable society can be realized, one that supports a high quality of life, fosters economic prosperity, and preserves the planet for future generations.
