Introduction
The Sharjah Triennale 2024 took for its main theme “The Architecture of Adaptability,” arguing that the significance of such a theme is hinged on the current global situation of overconsumption/production and a need for sustainable models of building. This larger narrative is complemented by a smaller sub-theme titled “The Aesthetics of Impermanence.” While the larger narrative is indeed a global concern and has been largely investigated, it could be argued that the notion of ‘Impermanence’—the sub-them —is also critical to discuss here, given the variable interpretations that such an idea conjures in different cultural contexts. The masterclass will attempt to discover the most important themes emerging from Sharjah’s Triennale experience, as described and photographed by 80 design students. To do so, the masterclass will explore the labyrinths of over 25 multicultural installations housed in an old school for boys, an old marketplace, and an abandoned slaughterhouse, exposing how these traditional architectural settings have been rehabilitated into symposia of modern socio-cultural exhibitions.
Abstract
In today’s globalized world, the preservation of architectural and cultural heritage has become increasingly important, answering emergent calls for social and cultural sustainability.
This masterclass will delve into the intricacies of such notions, exposing how globalization affected the perception and experience of architectural heritage; and explaining how architecture can still play a big role in enhancing social sustainability. Whether you are an artist, architect, historian, or simply passionate about socio architectural sustainability, this masterclass will equip you with the knowledge and inspiration to understand the intricacies of architectural rehabilitation, cultural communication, and social sustainability through the case study of the Sharjah Architectural Triennale 2024 and its three main exhibition settings.
